چکیده

Recent observations of quasars, Mrk 335 and the HST quasar composite spectrum, have indicated that many of them have remarkably soft ionizing continua (fν ∝ ν , 13.6 eV – 100 eV). We point out that the number of hν > 54.4 eV photons is insufficient to create the observed strengths of the He ii emission lines. While the numbers of photons which energize C iv λ1549 and Ovi λ1034 are sufficient, even the most efficiently emitting clouds for these two lines must each cover at least 20% – 40% of the source. If the typical quasar ionizing continuum is indeed this soft, then we must conclude that the broad emission line clouds must see a very different (harder) continuum than we see. The other viable possibility is that the UV – EUV SED is double-peaked, with the second peaking near 54 eV, its Wien tail the observed soft X-ray excess. We present the results of a GHRS program to monitor the absorption lines in the spectrum of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 4151 caused by outflowing gas from the nucleus. Although we see subtle changes over the four year period in the GHRS spectra of the broader of the absorption features, the wavelength constancy of all the features is remarkable. The limits on the secular acceleration suggest that ...

We present results of optical long-term variability campaigns (10 – 20 years) of the two Seyfert galaxies NGC 7603 and Mrk 110. The variations of the continuum, of the individual broad line intensities and of their line profiles are investigated in detail and compared to line profile variations in NGC 5548 and NGC 4593. Individual emission line profiles vary differently from line to line and fr...

Ne VIII λ774 is an important tracer of the high-ionization gas in QSOs. We examine the Ne VIII emission-line properties using new HST-FOS spectra of four sources, mean spectra derived from two QSO samples in the HST archives, and new photoionization calculations. The results support our previous claim that broad Ne VIII lines are common in QSOs, with an average flux of ∼42% of O VI λ1034 and ve...

Variability in Low Ionization Broad Absorption Line outflows

We present results of our time variability studies of Mg II and Al III absorption lines in a sample of 22 Low Ionization Broad Absorption Line QSOs (LoBAL QSOs) at 0.2 ≤ zem ≤ 2.1 using the 2-m telescope at IUCAA Girawali Observatory over a time-scale of 10 d to 7.69 years in the QSO’s rest frame. Spectra are analysed in conjunction with photometric light curves from Catalina Real-Time Transien...

We present a detailed analysis on the variability of the Fe K emission line in NGC 4051 using ASCA data. Through simple Gaussian line fits, we find not only obvious Fe K line variability with no significant difference in the X-ray continuum flux between two ASCA observations which were separated by ∼ 440 days, but also rapid variability of Fe K line on time scales ∼ 10 4 s within the second obs...
